A Return from The Brink!; 18th October 2013
I have been away for some time now for many reasons, both personal and musical. We're back now with new gigs appearing in the calendar. We have new musicians too, so the feel of the songs may be a little different too. You can hear more from John here:
Meanwhile check out the gigs page for updates as they come in.
Radio and Upcoming Stuff; 31st August 2012
I just thought I'd give you all a brief update on what we're doing in September. We have a pretty sweet acoustic headline gig at Gullivers in Manchester as part of an established music and poetry night called Guitar 'n' Verse. After that we are playing Ramsbottom Festival on Sunday alongside the likes of Roddy Frame and Seth Lakeman which we're really excited about.
It's really nice to see the album being downloaded and listened to regularly as well - so thanks to all of you who have done this. I went along to All FM this week and played a couple songs on the breakfast show, you can listen to that here: All FM Show
Reviews and Gigs; 1st May 2012
Hi everyone, it's been a while since the last update which was on the release of the album and it's launch! Thanks to those of you who got out to The Deaf Institute and made it such a special night. And thanks to everyone so far who has purchased a copy of the album.
We'll be playing a few gigs with more to be announced in the diary soon. This coming Friday (Jedi Day!?!) May 4th, we're playing the wonderful Crown of Lights night in Yorkshire at The Comrades Club. It's always a great night and well worth a visit if you're in that neck of the woods. Garron Frith, an excellent singer/songwriter, will be supporting us on the night. On Bank Holiday Monday we're then playing an acoustic set at Henry J Beans at The Printworks.
You can view all the upcoming gigs on the gigs page. So, if you haven't got a copy of the album yet, get one from the website, download it, or pop into Piccadilly Records who are currently stocking copies. Watch this space for more news in the coming weeks.
It Starts Again; 16th March 2012
Hope you're all happy and well out there. We have been incredibly busy getting the album together and planning the launch but we're finally there!
The album, 'It Starts Again,' was released this week and we are really pleased with it as was Bob Osborne who has completed the first review of the album which you can read here: Bob Osborne
We have also done the rounds on local radio stations and DJs have been incredibly supportive in playing the tracks from the album. Tony Thornborough featured the whole of the album minus two tracks last Sunday, all introduced by a very special guest, and you can hear the show here: Tony Thornborough
BBC Radio Manchester also made us artist of the week on Sunday and played tracks from the album.
So if you like what you have been hearing you can purchase the new CD on this website in the store. Alternatively you can download the album on iTunes or go to Piccadilly Records in Manchester and get yourself a copy.
‘John can easily be compared to the likes of Kurt Wagner and Nick Drake as a master craftsman both lyrically and musically.'.
Bob Osborne; Salford City Radio
‘Tales From A Northern City’ represents the rise to prominence of one of the region’s most creative and talented songwriting talents. 9/10.
Mike Roberts; Whisperin' & Hollerin'
Really, really love his work.
Sam Walker; BBC Radio Manchester Introducing
There is something of Paul Heaton – now an adopted Manc – about Herring’s music, occasional nods in the direction of such venerable English singer-songwriters as Richard Thompson and a whiff of unplugged Smiths.
Paul Taylor; City Life
‘The compositions are beautifully and meticulously constructed and arranged, mirroring the intensely emotional lyricism present on each track.'
Ryan Lloyd; Resonant Passage
'Herring’s vocals provide a very attractive cocktail of purity and northern grit – it’s the kind of complexity you’ll find elsewhere in performances by Doves or I Am Kloot, but I'd refer more to the former'
Jon Ashley; Manchester Music
